The Awards Season
By: Aadil Kherani
It is a new year, and the awards season is upon us once again. For lovers of all things movies, tv, and music, it is time for the best of 2020 to be compiled and awarded. Here is all you need to know about the upcoming award show dates, hosts, and nominees.
The Golden Globes
The 78th annual Golden Globe Awards happened on February 28th. These awards are presented by The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for film and television. The Golden Globes have shown gratitude towards frontline and essential workers by inviting a limited number to be part of the live audience amidst the pandemic. Excitingly, the hosts for this year are once again Tina Fey and Amy Poehler who previously hosted the Globes in 2013, 2014, and 2015. A background working together on Saturday Night Live results in Fey and Pohler having great chemistry, and they will certainly make the awards show very entertaining. The Crown leads with 6 nominations for television/series followed by Schitt’s Creek with 5 nominations, whereas Mank leads with 6 nominations for motion pictures followed by The Trial of the Chicago 7 with 5. Netflix has the most nominations with a total of 42 including 20 for television and 22 for movies. Some of my personal favorite motion picture nominations include Soul, Palm Springs, and Onward, and some of my favorite television nominations include Schitt’s Creek and The Queen’s Gambit.
The 63rd GRAMMY Awards is scheduled for March 14th, presented by The Recording Academy for music. There will be no audience this year due to COVID restrictions, but there will be a live red carpet. The host this year will be The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah, making this his first time hosting. Queen Bey (Beyoncé) has a total of 9 nominations with a lead of 3 nominations over Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift, and Roddy Ricch who are all tied with 6 nominations. Many critically acclaimed artists including The Weeknd, Miley Cyrus, Rina Sawayama, Halsey, and Selena Gomez have been robbed from nominations causing some to dub the show “The Scammys.” Some of my personal favorite album nominations include Future Nostalgia (Dua Lipa), Folklore (Taylor Swift), Punisher (Phoebe Bridgers), Chromatica (Lady Gaga), Fine Line (Harry Styles), Fetch The Bolt Cutters (Fiona Apple), and Ungodly Hour (Chloe x Halle). Some of my favorite song nominations are “Rain On Me” (Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande), “Don’t Start Now” (Dua Lipa), “Say So” (Doja Cat), “Kyoto” (Phoebe Bridgers), “Shameika” (Fiona Apple), “Lost In Yesterday” (Tame Impala), and “Do It” (Chloe x Halle.)
The 93rd Academy Awards is scheduled for April 25th. These awards are presented by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for movies. No host has been announced yet, and it is still uncertain if there will even be one. The nominations are planned to be announced on March 15th on YouTube and ABC.
Even in the midst of a pandemic, the award shows prevail. I am super excited for the award show season to begin. Are you excited for the award shows? Which one are you most excited for?
