A Reflection on the Girls Swim Team’s Superstar Season
By: Molly Claus
When it’s time for the freshman activities fair to begin, the Girls Swim and Dive team, a COOP with both North and South students, can usually be seen setting up one plaque on their table. After the 2021 season, an abundance of awards and major accomplishments will be added to the collection.
As difficult as long practices and grueling late weeknight meets can be, the girls on the team persevered, greatly improving performances at their regular season meets. Under the coaching of Angela Shaw, the 2021 season was arguably the most rewarding one yet. At the Maine West Pink Meet Invitational, the team brought home a first place finish and a trophy, beating all other participants by a landslide. At the York Invitational, Wheaton scored high enough to win second place, an impressive feat considering the strength of the opposing teams.
The conference meet proved to be a fantastic kick-off to the championship season, as most events resulted in significant time drops and fast races. Ellie Johnson, Hayden Wulf, Meda Fedaravicius, Peyton Pasqualicchio, and Jenna Hendrickson all received the All Conference award. Johnson, a Junior at North, reflects on the team’s superstar sectional meet, “we had a really solidified practice and meet schedule instead of looking so different like last year, and I think that really showed through each of our events at sectionals”. Johnson attributes the individual successes of all swimmers to the hard work they put in throughout the fall, while Pasqualicchio, a Sophomore, also believes the positive atmosphere of the team helped boost morale. Nearly 90% of all swims at this meet resulted in time drops and season best times. Hendrickson, a Freshman attending Wheaton Warrenville South High School and the team MVP, blew away the competition at Sectionals in her 200 IM and 500 freestyle, qualifying for state in both events. Hendrickson also broke the 500 freestyle team record at sectionals, adding to the collection of impressive accomplishments for the season.
